Dual x8/x8 motherboards
AM5 boards whose maker manuals document a CPU-lane PCIe x8/x8 split for two full-length GPUs. Dual builds stay on that list. Minimum budget is the only path that may show a cheaper single-x16 board.
AMD’s AM5 chipset table lists CPU graphics as 1×16 or 2×8. ROCm on Radeon multi-GPU wants identical width on the slots the GPUs use (x16+x16 or x8+x8), on CPU-connected slots — not a chipset leftover x4.
AMD’s AM5 chipset table lists CPU graphics as 1×16 or 2×8 (PCIe 5.0 on X870E and X670E; PCIe 4.0 on B650). That is the official CPU-direct split, not a chipset x4 leftover. ROCm on Radeon multi-GPU wants identical width on the slots the GPUs use (x16+x16 or x8+x8). A mixed x16+x8 pair is listed as not recommended. Keep GPUs on CPU-connected slots; read the board map.
Dual x8/x8 (CPU lanes)
Two full-length slots that the maker documents as a CPU-lane x16 or x8/x8 split. This is the default list for two-GPU builds and for one-GPU builds that are not on Minimum budget. Maker spec max RAM is cited on each row. AMD’s official Ryzen 9000 memory speed is DDR5-5600 with 2 DIMMs and DDR5-3600 with 4 DIMMs (product pages). Running 4 DIMMs at 6000 is an overclock. Four DIMMs usually run at a lower DDR5 speed than two. That is a bandwidth trade, not a capacity trade.
