Cited HIP / ROCm reports on Ryzen AI Max / Strix Halo (gfx1151) hang the GPU. dmesg prints `MES failed to respond to msg=REMOVE_QUEUE` (ROCm #5590). A related firmware row (ROCm #5724) describes MES 0x83 hangs and memory-access faults on the same gfx. This is not a local desktop measurement.
Impact on consumers
A HIP first-run on a mini-PC can look installed and still lock the desktop. People then blame the APU. Vulkan llama.cpp is the consumer first token on this site.
Workaround
Use llama.cpp Vulkan for a first token. Read the two upstream issues before you copy a kernel flag from a comment. We have not reproduced this hang on the local desktop and we do not invent a firmware pin.
